Cupping

Cupping

A traditional technique using suction cups to support circulation, release tension, and aid recovery.

What is cupping?

Cupping is a traditional therapy used in Chinese medicine and many other healing traditions around the world. Cups are applied to the skin and a gentle suction is created, drawing the tissue upward. This stimulates circulation, loosens tight muscles, and encourages the body’s natural recovery processes.

It is often described as the opposite of massage — instead of pressing down, cupping lifts. Many people find it deeply relaxing, and it can produce rapid results for muscular tension and pain.

What happens in a session?

  1. Assessment — we discuss the area of concern and I identify the most relevant points to work on.
  2. Cup placement — silicone or glass cups are placed on the skin, typically on the back, shoulders, or legs.
  3. Static or sliding cupping — cups may be left in place for a few minutes, or moved along the muscle to release tension across a broader area.
  4. Review — we discuss how you felt and any follow-up recommendations.

Sessions last approximately 30 minutes.

What are the marks?

Cupping often leaves circular marks on the skin — these are not bruises. They result from increased blood flow to the surface and typically fade within a few days to a week. The darker the mark, the more stagnation was present in that area according to Chinese medicine.

What is it used for?

  • Muscular tension and tightness, particularly in the back, shoulders, and neck
  • Sports recovery and injury prevention
  • Chronic pain and stiffness
  • Respiratory support — cupping on the upper back has traditionally been used to support lung health
  • General relaxation and stress relief

Cupping as part of acupuncture

Cupping is often combined with acupuncture in a standard session when relevant. If you are already coming for acupuncture and cupping would be useful, I will incorporate it at no additional cost.

The standalone cupping session is designed for those who want to focus specifically on cupping — for example, for sports recovery or targeted muscular relief.
