What is acupuncture?

Aymeric performing acupuncture in Valencia

Acupuncture is a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body. In Chinese medicine, health is understood as a balance of interconnected systems — when this balance is disrupted, symptoms arise. Acupuncture aims to support the body in restoring that balance.

Contemporary research has explored acupuncture’s effects on the nervous system, circulation, and pain pathways. Many people find it effective for conditions where conventional approaches have offered limited relief.

What happens in a session?

Each session follows a structured approach, though the details are always tailored to the individual.

  1. Consultation — we discuss your main concern, medical history, sleep, digestion, energy, and general wellbeing. The first session includes an extended consultation of up to 30 minutes.
  2. Assessment — I observe your tongue and take your pulse, two classical diagnostic methods used in Chinese medicine to understand the underlying pattern.
  3. Needling — a small number of fine, sterile needles are placed at relevant points. You rest comfortably for around 20–30 minutes while the needles work.
  4. Additional techniques — depending on your situation, I may also use moxibustion, cupping, or electro-acupuncture during the session.
  5. Review — we discuss how you felt and I give you any relevant advice for between sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your situation and how long you have been experiencing it. As a general guide:

  • Acute conditions often respond in 3 to 6 sessions
  • Chronic conditions typically require 8 to 12 sessions, then maintenance as needed
  • Some people notice a difference after the first session; others see gradual improvement

I give an honest assessment after the first session, and we adjust the plan based on how you respond.

What styles do I use?

I draw on three main traditions depending on what works best for each person:

  • Classical Acupuncture — rooted in the foundational texts of Chinese medicine
  • TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) — the most widely practised contemporary system
  • Master Tung Acupuncture — a classical lineage known for fast results, using distal points away from the area of complaint

Is it right for me?

Acupuncture may be worth exploring if you:

  • Have tried other approaches without lasting relief
  • Are looking for a whole-body, personalized approach
  • Want to address the underlying pattern, not just the symptoms
  • Are curious about Chinese medicine and want to understand your body better

Under Spanish law, Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture are not recognised medical modalities. Sessions do not constitute medical care, diagnosis, or treatment. Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns. Full legal notice →
